Chapter 17

(Deirdra – December 22, 1999)

Time over the past week had blurred, my actions seeming like one never-ending nightmare. During the day, my rest was unsatisfying and nights found me tired, thirsty, and in a foul mood. My thoughts I knew were no longer my own and I had become paranoid of everything and everyone. Having talked with Mylana and Elijah two nights earlier hadn’t placed me into the best of moods either. Why won’t she and Elijah just join Adam and I? We should be able to walk among the living, to rule their petty and nonessential lives. But as I thought this, I knew it wasn’t really how I felt. I began to question my thoughts and my sanity. However, as soon as some lucidity fell over me, my thirst–my hunger–began to gnaw at me. Unable to fight back, I surrendered to it astonishingly quick.

All alone, my thoughts turned to Adam. I wanted to be with him. I craved to be in his deadly grasp, drinking his blood and having it course through my veins. I knew that I had become addicted to his blood. I found myself needing his or another immortal’s blood to quench my thirst over and above any mortal’s lifeblood. Using what little willpower I had left, I vowed not to go to him. So I would hunt. I would attempt to tame my bloodlust with a mere human. In a blood-red haze state of mind, I made my way to the same Goth bar that I had been frequenting lately. If I won’t allow myself Adam, then I will have someone else. I thought, trying to make my thoughts seem logical and right.

Making my way through the front entrance of the bar, I sauntered around the patrons. The lights flickered and danced delightfully and the smell of cigarette smoke, spilt beer and hard liquor wafted through the place. The heavy alternative music blared from gigantic speakers, making my chest vibrate with each boom of the bass. I let my eyes fall upon one beautiful and fearless youth to the next. A smile crossed my lips as I realized how much I loved the hunt itself. Seeing these children filled with reckless abandon with no cares or fears, that is what made the stakes even higher in my mind. Oh, how I delighted in the thought of their impending deaths.

Walking through the crowd, I was jolted from my delight when I began to feel a dizzying sensation. Stopping, I held onto the nearby table causing the people sitting there to stare up at me.

“What the hell’s your problem?” A young girl yelled out to me. Ignoring her, I tried to steady myself. Standing now unassisted but unsure of my footing and balance, I looked down at the group of four kids–three boys and one girl.

“I’m…” I had begun to apologize but as the words started to leave my lips, no longer did the kids sit there. What sat there were unpleasant memories from my past.
